Don't forget the LRV!
LRV stands for Light Reflectance Value. All paint colors have them and they are usually labeled on the fan decks. The scale runs from 0 %- black, a low LRV which means it absorbs light to 100% - white, a high LRV which means it reflects light.
This tool can be very helpful. If you want a room to feel bigger and brighter pick a color with a high LRV.

If you want to a room to feel darker or cozier chose a color with a low LRV.

There are 2 tricks to the LRV rule - finishes and yellow! Matt finishes can increase light absorption and gloss finishes can increase light reflection.
Yellow has a high LRV but the more wall space that is covered the more intense the color. This is contradictory to the light reflection rule. Be careful with yellows. They are in a class of their own.
